This 172-Square-Foot Shoebox” Micro Apartment Makes Small Space Living Feel Spacious

by Rick Anderson

As the population in cities continue to grow, the cost of living continues to increase and the race for space gets more competitive. Smaller spaces are part of the solution, but that doesn’t have to mean sacrificing an aesthetically pleasing home—and this micro apartment serves as proof.

Located in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, the 172-square-foot tiny space is filled with built-in storage solutions that maximize spaciousness and functionality. Designed by Beirut-based Elie Metni , the diminutively named “ Shoebox ” is an example of how to tackle the city’s affordable housing shortage through its compact layout.

Located on top of an older building, the micro apartment is wall-to-wall white—from the painted and tiled walls to the under-storage units and the washer and dryer (which also, a washer and dryer!). Windows flank either side of the unit and allow for natural light, which along with the the minimal palette, makes the space appear larger.

Underneath the couch, storage units can be used for books and magazines; a coffee table, cup holder, trash can, and foot rest pop out when the moment calls for it. The dining room table can be flipped up or rolled out, with two wooden chairs that fit underneath it.

In the bedroom, there’s even more storage under and on the sides of the double bed, with nearby electrical outlets for charging devices. A desk is right next to the bed that can also function as a nightstand, and as a place where more books, magazines, and miscellaneous objects can find a home.

Although there’s only one “Shoebox” micro apartment, this space serves as an example of how small living quarters can also feel spacious and delightful.
