Populous’s T-Mobile Arena Set to Open in Las Vegas

by Rick Anderson

Las Vegas is known, among many things, to be a city of bright lights. A stroll down the famous Strip will take pedestrians past the luminous Venetian, the stately Bellagio and its spectacular water show, and the replica of Paris’s Eiffel Tower . On Wednesday, April 6, the T-Mobile Arena will officially open, becoming the newest entertainment venue in the City of Lights. To find inspiration for the 650,000-square-foot arena, the architects at Populous simply looked around the city. “We took the approach that this arena should be a building that is of Vegas and of its surroundings,” says Kurt Amundsen, principal of Populous . “So we let the culture influence the architecture, allowing the design to become a nexus between the desert landscape and the Strip itself.”

The arena’s façade is partially wrapped in reddish-brown metal paneling (a hue that echoes the mountains in the distance) and features expanses of glass accented with a series of LED bars and lights intended to reflect the spirit of the Strip. The $375 million complex, a joint venture by AEG and MGM Resorts International, also features a plaza and walkway lined with trees and restaurants, an outdoor space made hospitable in the desert sun thanks to greenery and canopies overhead. Inside the 20,000-seat arena, each tier of seating features its own color palette with different mood and theatrical lighting schemes. The venue also offers seating options, such as the Hyde Lounge, whose windows capture beautiful skyline views of the Strip.

After nearly two years of construction and anticipation in a city dedicated to entertainment, the T-Mobile Arena has a long line of events ready to begin. Among the first performers to hit the stage in the coming weeks are Nicki Minaj, Billy Joel, and Janet Jackson. t-mobilearenaom
