LG launches 105in curved UHD TV in the UK for a huge £60,000

by Rick Anderson

LG has launched its largest ever curved TV in the UK this morning, measuring a massive 105in for an eye-watering £60,000. As you'd expect, the LG 105UC9 is one of LG's Ultra HD TVs, but its elongated 21:9 aspect ratio means it will have a 5K resolution of 5,120x2,160 - that's five times the resolution of a standard 16:9 Full HD TV. It also adds another 3 million pixels compared to a 16:9 4K display, which has a resolution of 3,840x2,160, bringing the total number of pixels up to a staggering 11 million.

Available exclusively from Harrods, the 105UC9 is the first LG TV to have a 21:9 aspect ratio, and it means you'll be able to watch films as they were originally intended without those irritating black bars getting in the way. It will also have built-in 150W speakers built by Harman Kardon that will be able to produce 7.2 channel audio for a more cinematic listening experience. In a statement, LG said it hopes it will be able to deliver "a sonic performance worthy of an actual movie theatre."

The panel itself will use a refined version of LG's thin film transistor (TFT) pixel circuit technology, which prevents colour leakage and overcomes the challenges of creating an even backlight on a curved display. The LG 105UC9 will also be powered by LG's webOS Smart+ interface, so you'll be able to enjoy catch-up services from Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, BBC iPlayer, Demand 5 and Now TV.

“LG is known for its innovative and market leading technologies and we’re proud to bring our largest ever Curved television to the UK, to be sold exclusively in Harrods," said Andrew Mackay, LG Commercial Director of Consumer Electronics for UK & Ireland. "With a resolution of 11 million pixels, the 105-inch Curved Ultra HD panel is proof of our continued leadership in the next generation display market, offering exceptional world-class value to our customers.”

The news follows Samsung's announcement in September that it too will be launching a 105in 21:9 UHD TV, but Samsung's TV will also be bendable, allowing it to go from flat to curved seamlessly to match your preferred viewing style. Samsung has yet to announce a price for its massive TV, though, but you can bet it will cost more than LG's £60,000 105in TV once you add in the extra premium for a bendy display. Either way, both TVs will likely bankrupt your average customer, so start saving those pennies now if you want one of the world's largest TVs ever made.
