How to Bring Fashion’s Neon Trend Home

by Rick Anderson

Trends in interior design don’t move quite as quickly as they do in fashion, but the home market still follows the runways to some extent. And if this past New York Fashion Week and the recent award show red carpets are any indicators, neons are about to come back into the collective color story after chalky pastels, moody indigos, and metallics have dominated for so long. Designer Christian Siriano sent some models down the catwalk in full neon lime outfits and others in navy punctuated with that same green, while actresses Tracee Ellis Ross, Regina King, and others rocked day glo dresses at Monday night’s Emmy Awards. Want to follow in their bold footsteps? Let neon add a little energy to your rooms.

The easiest way to get your neon on at home is through bright colored accents. Try some tabletop accessories, textiles or even a chair.

Or you could go big with neon paint. Somehow, this homeowner managed to put hot pink and electric lime in the same home, right next to each other. And while it’s not for me, I applaud the eclecticism.

You can also dabble in the trend with a neon light mounted on your wall or set on a desk or shelf. You get that megawatt color fix when you need it, but it can be turned on and off at your whim.

And by keeping the walls white and your furniture simple, there are ways to work neon into an otherwise neutral palette, as seen here with bedding and bright colored books.

Want a few product recommendations? These are the neon pieces we’re loving right now.

Neon Tassel Wall Hanging , $49

If you’re color shy, this wall hanging with neon tassel accents is a way to test the waters. Try it over your bed or in a gallery wall arrangement.

Alexandra von Furstenberg Coasters Chevron 4-Pack Multi Fearless Set , $85/4

AVF (Alexandra von Furstenberg) is kind of the OG of neon home goods. She’s been making hot colored acrylic tables since 2008, but they’re not cheap. Neither are her coasters, but a set of four does come in under $100.

Gemstone Soap , $13 each

The best way to do neon in a bathroom? These fluorescent soap rocks. I guarantee they will get guests’ attention in a powder room. Kids will probably love them, too.

Bea Pink Velvet Sofa , $1,080

Well, this tufted hot pink velvet sofa isn’t for the decorating faint of heart. But it’ll sure make a statement in a contemporary living room.

Merkury 16 in. Peace Neon Sign , $30

Part of me thinks neon is surging again because everyone is obsessed with neon signs. This emoji style would be great for a dorm room or even a home office.

Acrylic Lip Shaped Tray by Area in Neon at Amazon, $36

How cute would this lip-shaped tray look on a vanity or nightstand? Very.

Large Trunk in Neon Pink at Dormify, $189

Should you need a storage piece that doubles as a coffee table, try this trunk. It’s an instant focal point. You won’t be able to miss it in a room.

Viv + Rae Brooke Crib at Wayfair, $87

This metal, lead-free crib is traditional in silhouette but turned up in color. In addition to lime green, it’s also available in hot pink.
