Formaldehyde Pollution and Treatment

Formaldehyde is a colorless gas. It has a special irritating smell and has irritating effect on human body. The relative density in gaseous state is 1.067 (air is 1). The density in liquid state is 0.815 g/cm ² (-20 ℃). Its melting point is-92 ℃. The boiling point is-19.5 ℃. It is soluble in water or ethanol. The concentration of its aqueous solution can reach up to 55%. Usually 40%, called formaldehyde water, commonly known as formalin. It is a colorless liquid with stimulating smell.

The indoor building materials are the main sources of formaldehyde. Such as furniture, artificial boards, various adhesive coatings and synthetic textiles.

Specific sources of formaldehyde pollution include:

I. Sources in the Air

1. All kinds of phenolic resin rubber wood-based panels such as wall panels and ceilings.  Such as plywood, fine wood, fiberboard and particle board.

2. Decorative materials that contain formaldehyde and may be emitted to the outside. Such as wall covering, paint and paint pipes.

3. Indoor display and daily necessities that may emit formaldehyde. Such as chemical fiber carpets and foam plastics.

4. Some materials that will emit formaldehyde after combustion. Such as cigarettes.

II. Sources in Clothing

Glyoxal resin is used to set white shirts or non-ironing clothes. In particular, some jeans advertise 100% wrinkle-proof and shrink-proof clothing. As well as cotton non-ironing shirts, all contain formaldehyde.

III. Sources in Food

Formaldehyde is often added to food. It is for bleaching, protein solidification and preservation.

Indoor formaldehyde pollution generally comes from furniture, wallpaper, carpets, curtains, paints, glue, etc.

Treatment Methods of Formaldehyde:

1. Ventilation method. The amount of pollution released after the decoration is the largest. The best way is to open the window for ventilation.

2. Plant method: Proper cultivation of some green plants.

3. Activated carbon method: It can adsorb harmful substances. Activated carbon lasts for 3 to 6 months. When it is saturated, it will lose its activity. At the same time, it can play a better role in using nano-live ore. Effectively decompose formaldehyde, benzene and other harmful gases.  

4. Photocatalyst method. This can make formaldehyde in the air and furniture continuously decompose. But it must be under the condition of light, let light activate it. This method has a long-term and sustained effect, which can reach as long as 5 years. And has no toxic or side effects. It is the most popular and greenest formaldehyde removal method.

5. Plant source purification method. This is to spray atomized terpenoids to remove formaldehyde. This compound has a wide range of biological activities.

Formaldehyde pollution is the most serious indoor air pollution. It is quite harmful to human body. We must pay attention to formaldehyde pollution.
